Called “chicken linen,” “hen house linen,” or “pretties”, feedsack cloth is recycled material from sugar, flour, grain and livestock feed sacks. Printed with floral and geometric designs, they were used as material to sew everything from womens’ and girls’ dresses to boys’ shirts.
Flour sacks, the softest and finest sack available, were used to make underwear, baby clothes and diapers. When opened, a feedsack bag was approximately 37″ x 43″; more than one yard of fabric.
The dress features a fabric conserving a-line skirt, short sleeves and your choice of collars. Reproduction feedsack fabric is very popular and available at most local fabric stores. Pick something in your Kit’s favorite color and sew up a little piece of history tonight.
