During the Depression feed bag manufacturers were desperate to increase sales. Focusing on women, rather than the men who usually purchased feed, they began a brilliant marketing campaign when they introduced feed bags made from dress-quality fabric.
Brand competition was fierce, as women scoured general stores to find matching sacks. One sack produced about a yard of fabric. The average woman’s dress required roughly three yards, thus three bags of feed.
Princess seamed dresses were very popular in the 1930s as they used less material than a traditional skirt and bodice. This pattern features puffed sleeves, a shaped collar and decorative tabs at the waistline.
